Blocked drains tips for the misfortunate
At the end of a hard day’s work, you get into the shower and enjoy the buzz of hot water on your face and then, suddenly your feet seem to go under water too – Oh no, the drain is choked once again!. Is there anything as inconvenient and messy as a clogged up drain pipe!. Or you’re in front of the toilet sink, brushing your teeth and before you know it – the sink is halfway full. The prospect of sorting blocked drainage out is not a happy one; it can be messy and time consuming. However it is something that every household has to deal with, sooner or later. So you should know how to unclog them, well in advance.
Why do drainage get plugged?.
blocked drainage can occur when some material such as hair, dust and particles become trapped in the area between your bathroom drainpipe and the drainage pipes that follow underneath. The problem is further exacerbated when household products such as soaps, detergents, shampoos and conditioners and others are allowed to build up on the growing accumulation. When the accumulation reaches a level of thickness that constrains the free movement of water, the problem is pointed out as blocked drain pipe. So, if you are finding the water isn’t running freely through your drain resulting in water rising quickly in your bath or sink chances are that you have a blockage in your plumbing system.
Some effective ways to unclog your bathroom drain pipe are listed below.
If you want your water to start flowing freely then there are a few things you can do to rectify the problem. The first thing you will have to do is take out the plug of the blocked sink or drainpipe. In case of a bathroom sink, the plug can be removed easily with a simple pull or it might need the complex effort of unlocking the hook keeping it in place from under the sink. In case of your bath, the plug can be unscrewed at the mouth of the drainage or the overflow plate can be removed to expose the assembly.
Once you remove the plug, you may then be able to see the source of the blockage. It will most certainly appear like a collection of hair and other particles covered with slimy material inside the drain’s piping. Put on a pair of gloves and extract whatever clogs comes within reach. If the debris is further down than your hand can reach, push in a bent wire or coat hanger and coax the clumps out. Removing the hair, detergent residues and the rest of the material will surely solve your problem.
In a case of deeper clogging, your hand or hooked wire may not do the trick – you may have to try the next step. blockages which are very deep can be removed with the help of a drainpipe plunger. First, cover the overflow drain with a wet cloth in order to make the air suction from the plunger stronger. Then put the plunger over the drainpipe mouth and press it up and down repeatedly. Hopefully, after doing this and once the plunger is taken away, any water should flow freely down the drainpipe as the vacuum created freed the blockage.
You may have to turn to a chemical solution, if the plunger fails to do the job. Chemicals used in these cleaners are toxic and are to be used only when all else fails as they can affect your sanitary fixtures and pose a health risk.
Call a professional plumber if all else fails.
If the above methods fail to solve your clogged drainpipe problem then you may have to contact a plumber. A professional plumber should quickly solve your problem with his special tools and equipment. Taking professional help will cost you a bit but it is definitely worth it.
