Could the methane gas coming from the drain be causing our health problems?
Its coming from a drain right outside my sons bedroom window and frequently fills his room, our bathroom and hall especially at night when we are washing dishes, having showers and so on. The repairguy says the vent is in the wrong place. This is a 7yr old rental house. Apart from the obvious flamability (my son has been able to ignite it,) I am also concerned as the two children who have used that room over the 7yrs have suffered various mentle health conditions and my son is behaving aggressivly. As a family we have all had various health problems since living in this house but kept being told there were no leaks, we were imagining it. Could our health problems be related to the leak? And what should/could we do about it, healthwise and repairwise?
We have to open the window at night and in the morning as its been 35-41C, 95-105.8F often lately and we have no airconditioning. The house is like an oven. PS, We live in Australia.
For those who suggested I move that is impossible as I would still be under the same landlords, as I require wheelchair ramps and can only get this thru government housing. (and yes they do charge average local rent) Also they dont provide air conditioning as its meant to provide ‘basic’ essentials no luxuries. (ie: roof, walls, floors, minimum required bedrooms, bathroom, laundry and kitchen plumbing) Regards repair they dont have to answer to the local authorities regards this, they are exempt from following any government or local authority mandates. I already had that arguement with them when explaining that my Wheelchair doesnt fit thru the house properly and the Government has already assessed this need for disabled and put down mandates that all, (except them) must follow.

- How to help a 3 year old get over a fear of drains?
Our 3 year old daughter is deathly afraid of drains we dont know why or how we have never told her she will be sucked down one or anything like that. But due to her fear of drains potty training so far is going on in the living room which for now I dont mind but we will need her to use the toilet and being so afraid to go because it drains. We have touched the bathtub drain and sink drains in front of her empty, full, and while draining to show her its safe but she screams like she is going to die....
Methane is not toxic. The immediate health hazard is that it may cause burns if it ignites. It is highly flammable and may form explosive mixtures with air. Methane is violently reactive with oxidizers, halogens, and some halogen-containing compounds. Methane is also an asphyxiant and may displace oxygen in an enclosed space. Asphyxia may result if the oxygen concentration is reduced to below 19.5% by displacement. The concentrations at which flammable or explosive mixtures form are much lower than the concentration at which asphyxiation risk is significant. When structures are built on or near landfills, methane off-gas can penetrate the buildings’ interiors and expose occupants to significant levels of methane. Some buildings have specially engineered recovery systems below their basements to actively capture such fugitive off-gas and vent it away at it is flammable.
Yes methane gas is poisonous. If you are renting and you know about all of these problems, why don’t you move?? Your country doesn’t make homeowners responsible for repair and maintenance of the house?
I don’t know anything about the Land Down Under but in the US the local Board of Health ( Board of Sanitation) would force the land lord to make a repair immediately..You must have a similar government office.??
Move to a house with air conditioning.
