How would you handle a blocked drain in your toilet? – Keep a plunger handy for such emergency situations. Using a waste pipes plunger is relatively simple to do. But don’t just shove the plunger into the drainpipe and start pumping it violently, you could make matters much worse. For the best results you should place the head of the plunger over the drainpipe, smoothly push down and bring up again quickly creating and even suction in the drains pipes pipe. The suction created when the plunger is pulled up will hopefully dislodge the material clogging the toilet, tub or sink in your bathroom. Some tubs and sinks have an overflow outlet; remember to plug this outlet with the help of a wet towel or sponge before using the plunger.
An alternative for plunger is a chemical waste pipes clearance product, one that uses corrosive chemical to unclog the blockage of the drainpipe. These products should be used only when the plunger has failed to clean out your bathroom drainpipe. Run the chemical into the drainage and allow it to work for about 30 minutes before flushing the drain with hot water. During the cleaning process, chemicals and dirt may spill over your clothes, therefore as a precaution wear old clothes. If you are not careful the chemical filled water may splash on your face while you are using the drainage plunger, so use some eye protection for the same. Just be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid any unnecessary problems.
You can use a pipe wrench or pliers to unscrew the P-trap if you are unable to remove the blockage with the plunger, this will give you access to the pipe. Removing the drain trap can release a sudden rush of waste water, so keep a mop and pail handy, put a bucket underneath the p-trap before you disconnect it. In order to avoid scratching the chrome surface of your pipes while at the same time getting a tight hold up them, you can cover the metal jaws of your wrench with electrical tape. Once the P-trap is removed, check the trap for any solid materials obstructing the pipe opening. If you don’t see anything, the problem might unfortunately go far deeper and may be located between the trap and the drains pipes soil stack.
A deep clog in the toilet can be loosened by a toilet auger. If you are attempting to clean the drain pipe of your tub or sink, you should use a drain pipe snake. The flexible snake wire can be inserted deep into pipework of smaller diameter. Once you have pushed deep enough, rotate the handle to screw and hook into the blockage and slowly draw it out, this should pull the blockage with it. The P-trap should be reconnected once the obstruction is cleared, slowly flush the drain with hot water to confirm that there is no obstruction and that there are no leaks. Everything should be sealed properly after the whole process is over, the P-trap and pipes should also be checked for any leaks.
If the drainpipe is still obstructed after all these measures, or if the problem reoccurs chronically, employ a competent plumber or drains pipes contractor to fix it. You will need to call a professional plumber or drainage service when the blockage is in the sewer or soil track or when it is due to tree roots, or when the pipe has collapsed due to some reason.
