Plan to stave off blocked drainage
How would you handle a choked drainage in your toilet? – Keep a plunger handy for such emergency situations. The whole process of unclogging a blocked drain is pretty simple and straightforward. Obviously you shouldn’t move the plunger up and down forcefully as this will be ineffective and could make the blockage worse. The most effective procedure to adopt is to cover the drainpipe completely with the bell-shaped head of the plunger and push down gently, then come up quickly and forcefully creating suction. So any material that is stuck into the bathroom, sink or tub drainpipe should come out with the upward pull on the drains plunger. Some washbasins and bathtubs are provided with overflow openings that have to be blocked temporarily with a wet cloth for the plunger to develop effective suction.
You could use a drains clearance chemical that is designed to break down the material instead of the more conventional plunger. First attempt to clear the drainage with a plunger, only then should you try the chemical solutions as they can be hazardous for the novice. The solutions should be left alone for sometime as they loosen up the blockage, then you should pour down hot water into the drain pipe to clear the whole thing out. Just to be careful, you must put on clothes that you wouldn’t care about if they get spoiled by dirt or harmful chemicals. If you are not careful the chemical filled water may splash on your face while you are using the drains plunger, so use some eye protection for the same. Also remember to read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully so that you do not create new problems.
The next thing you can attempt to use if your plunger is ineffective is to loosen the nuts holding the P-trap in place with pliers or a pipe wrench. Removing the drainpipe trap can release a sudden rush of waste water, so keep a mop and pail handy, put a bucket underneath the p-trap before you disconnect it. Chrome plated fittings can be protected from scratches by taping up the teeth of the pliers or wrench; that should also give you a firmer grip on the nuts of the trap. Once you have removed the P-trap you can inspect the trap thoroughly for any blockage. If you dont find anything on the P-trap, then it means that the problem lies deeper somewhere between the trap and soil stack.
A toilet auger can be used for unclogging the toilet. If you are attempting to clean the drain pipe of your tub or sink, you should use a drainage snake. Plumbers drainage snakes have been specifically designed to enter deep into the narrow pipe work. With the help of the adjustable handle, you can literally drill into the blockage and pull out the clog from the drain. After you have successfully removed the the blockage you should put the P-trap back into place and check if water can flow through freely. Make sure that everything is tight and sealed properly and test the P-trap for leaks.
If the drainpipe is still choked after all these measures, or if the problem reoccurs chronically, employ a competent plumber or drainage contractor to fix it. If the clog is stuck in the soil stack or the sewer service pipe has broken either due to age or because of natural causes, then you can do nothing much expect for relying on the expert waste pipes company to solve your problem.
