What can you do if you are stuck with a stopped drainpipe? Well the easiest way to unclog your bathroom drainpipe is to use a waste pipes plunger. Using a waste pipes plunger is relatively simple to do. What you don’t want to do however is to vigorously pump up and down like a jack hammer. Place the cup of the plunger exactly over the drain and push it downwards and upwards with short sharp movements that generate suction within the drainpipe and pipe. Hopefully the suction of the upwards movement of the drains plunger will pull what ever is stuck in your drain pipe back up into the bathroom toilet, tub or sink. You may notice small overflow openings in your bath or sink and you should always remember to block these up with a wet paper towel or sponge to create maximum suction.

You could use a drainage clearance chemical that is designed to break down the material instead of the more conventional plunger. But it would only be recommended to resort to using chemicals after you have tried fixing the problem with a drains plunger. The solutions should be left alone for sometime as they loosen up the blockage, then you should pour down hot water into the drainage to clear the whole thing out. Use rough clothes that cover your body fully as things could get a bit mucky and some of the strong chemicals may spill on you and burn exposed skin. And since plunging can throw water in any direction you might want to consider eye-wear in order to protect you from any chemicals. The chemical product comes with specific manufacturer’s directions; it is important to read and follow them carefully.

If both the plunger and chemicals fail to alleviate the clogging problem you have, then you can try unscrewing the nuts on the P-trap with pliers or a pipe wrench to gain access to the pipe. Now, this process can be really messy, so keep the towel and bucket handy. If you don’t want to damage the chrome finish of your pipes and also to get a better grip on the pipe, you can wrap the jaws of your wrench with electrical tape. You will be able to check the waste pipes P-trap for any stoppages in the pipe opening after you remove it. If, however you cannot find any solid materials the problem is probably harder to get to, between the trap and the soil stack deep in the drains pipework.

To unclog the toilet, you should use a toilet auger to get at these deep seated obstructions. If on the other hand you are attempting to unclog your tub or sink you may need to use a drain pipe snake. drainpipe snakes are designed to reach deep down into the far reaches of your narrow pipes. By turning the handle to dig into the blockage, you can bring the blockage up and away from the drainage. Once, you have taken out the obstruction, re-fix the P-trap and rinse the drain with hot water to make sure that the entire clog has been removed. Make sure that all the connections are properly fitted and sealed, and also check the P-trap for leakages.

If none of the steps you have taken work, it is time to bring in a professional plumber. Professional plumbers can identify and solve serious problems like aged pipes caving in, tree root invasion, blocked sewer line or soil stack; these should not be attempted by the homeowner as you will not have the right tools to solve the problem.
