Only when multiple blockages occur in your house may you then you realise the mistake of not taking precautionary measures.
But do you know how drains get blocked?.
Carelessness is the prime cause of clogged drains. It is normal for kitchen sink drains to get blocked if there is no strainer used to get hold of food particles and other wastes while cleaning the food or the utensils. These particles if not caught in a strainer, will accumulate in the drain and lead to blockage. Accumulation of cooking grease or oil in the drain pipes can make the situation even worse. Excessive flushing of large amounts of toilet paper can be responsible for clogging in the toilet.
One of the main reasons for a clogged toilet drain is flushing of unintended toilet items. Items like baby wipes, paper towels and sanitary napkins can cause a blockage immediately or over a period of time. Hair often gets entangled in the pipes and clog the bathtubs, showers and the sinks. Frequent usage of soaps, shampoos, hair gel and toothpaste can worsen the blockage further.
There can also be times when the things you put in the drains are not responsible for the blockage. Some common plumbing problems faced are due to crushed drains, rusted pipes, tree roots and scale.
Drain Clog Remedies.
You can attempt to clear clogged drains yourself by using acids or other chemical products designed for this purpose. However you should note that using such chemicals can be harmful for health and environment and can also damage the pipes and fixtures. Fortunately, some natural methods are available for removing drain clogs. One such method involves running boiling water through the drains on a regular basis. The use of baking soda and vinegar is an alternative measure that can be taken. Pour vinegar on the clogged drain and sprinkle baking soda over it. Wait for 15 minutes so that the mixtures sets in properly and then wash it off with boiling water to clear the blockage.
Proper examination and prevention is better than facing a blocked drain.
Your pipework is a working system that needs maintenance, just like your car or machinery. So it also requires regular maintenance. You can be vigilant about what’s going on with your drains and pipes and perform part of the inspection yourself, as you are most familiar with how the drains behave. To avoid the situation of an extremely clogged drain you should get your whole drainage system inspected by a professional drains contractor on a regular basis. It is advisable to have a plumber “snake” all of your drainpipes at least roughly once a year, as a means of preventing blockages. If you experience drain clogs very often or your pipes are susceptible to blockages, you may wish to have your drain lines snaked more often. All major drains must be checked regularly by CCTV inspections.
Regular inspection of the drains is important as the blockage can cost you a lot and not too forget it can be quite irritating too.
